I had the pleasure of chatting with a fellow AH mastermind yesterday, and among other things we discussed, we passed over the concept of 'Buy Orders'.
Other mmo games have them, and they usually work to great success. Essentially, they are auctions that will purchase goods at a pre-set price, rather than auctions that are selling goods at a pre-set price. While obvious sounding, the changes this would make to WoW would be huge. For one thing, most people use Auctioneer, or a similar mod, to price items based on a median value. The core component of these price adjustments function by scanning the AH regularly for priced goods and adjusting the saved values accordingly.
Buy orders would keep goods off the market, as the Buyer's orders would be fulfilled, and the goods instantly transferred to the purchaser. Thus, breaking Auctioneer / similar mods.
That would be supremely important, as most people don't watch an item they will buy in advance, rather just go by whatever their mod tells them something is worth and substitute thinking with what they are told by the computer. We take advantage of this sometimes as goblins, but really it is a change we had to grow accustomed to. Before Auctioneer became popular (Before TBC) people basically set prices where they wanted, and trade materials controlled product materials.
The second added benefit to Buy orders, would be for the general economy. Say I wanted to buy a Titansteel Destroyer. To place the Buy order, I would have to give the Auction House say... 900 Gold. So that when someone found my Buy order, if they crafted the item and completed my request, they would immediately receive payment. So we're taking money out of people's pockets and putting it back into the market. This is good! We're also showing people that aren't very good at making money, but have a trade, that "Hey, I can make this 1 item and profit".
In conclusion, I think Buy orders would do much to help stagnant or inflated WoW economies. In general, Blizzard monitors and adjusts the game to account for inflation where it can. Generally, they increase or decrease in-game item costs to adjust for gold in the system. These changes require patches and general growth of average wealth over time. Such a system of Buy orders would be self balancing. Thoughts?
